Our Comprehensive Cancer Center is committed to exploring and developing innovative ways to prevent and reduce cancer’s devastating effects through a collaborative research program. With more than 200 cancer specialists, leading-edge research, and new and better treatments, we are attacking cancer from every angle.

Chef Triumphs Over Tongue Cancer

Cancer specialists across the country told top chef Grant Achatz (pictured above right) that his only option for treating a stage 4 tumor was to remove most of his tongue. The head and neck cancer team at UChicago Medicine offered him a different approach, one that saved his tongue and his life.

Transplant Institute

Ever since the first human organ transplant was performed at UChicago Medicine, our transplant program has continued to be a world leader. Our experts use revolutionary approaches and strive to complete transplants quickly with exceptional outcomes. We are a world leader in multi-organ transplant for the sickest patients.

One-Year Survival of Multi-Organ Transplant Patients

Liver Transplant

  • Performed the first successful living-donor liver transplantation in the world
  • One of the few centers offering liver autotransplant for tumors in hard-to-reach locations

Lung Transplant

  • The first hospital in Illinois to use ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) to prepare donor lungs for transplant, increasing the number of available donor lungs and decreasing the risk of life threatening complications.

Kidney Transplant

  • The least invasive technique for nephrectomy involves making a single, small incision inside the belly button, thereby concealing the scar afterward.

Pancreas & Islet Transplant

  • One of a few U.S. hospitals to offer autologous islet cell transplantation after total pancreatectomy
One Year After Triple Transplant Surgery

In December 2018, Sarah McPharlin and Daru Smith received new hearts, livers and kidneys. The story of their friendship captured the attention of millions. Since their surgeries, UChicago Medicine has performed four more triple transplants. No other medical facility in the world has done as many.

Pediatric Care at Comer Children's

Comer Children's Hospital provides innovative medical care to children with everything from common illnesses to the most complex medical problems. We combine advanced technology with a family-centered, kid-friendly philosophy, setting national standards of care for all children. We admit roughly 5,000 patients from the Chicago area, the Midwest and around the world each year.

Our hospital is:

  • One of the country's few centers to offer I131-MIBG therapy to neuroblastoma patients
  • First site in the U.S. to be certified for FDA-approved CAR T-cell therapies for specific blood cancers in both adult and pediatric patients. More than 150 patients have been infused to date.
